Every so many years something comes out or happens that causes a huge ripple in the trends and interest of pop culture. About four or five years ago it seemed that vampires were everywhere. First there was the hugely popular HBO series, True Blood that caught the world by storm. Then came the Twilight books and movies. It seemed that everyone had vampire fever!
Ever since the movie, “Night Of The Living Dead” came out there has been a quiet cult following of the zombie genre.
There have been countless vampire movies and stories just as there have been zombie related ones too. However every now and then a story can jump miles ahead of the rest and really make themselves stand out.
I am talking about a comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard that was made into one of the most popular TV series on cable right now. That show is AMC’s The Walking Dead. The show is fantastic and I simply can not get enough of it.
When I realized that video game makers Telltale Games was making this series into a playable video game. I was hugely excited but skeptical about how they were going to pull this off.
Well after playing through the entire first chapter I can say that they have created another hit that I am sure will serve as growing The Walking Dead fan base even further into the video gaming world.
To start the graphics of the game are done in a graphic novel comic book style that is just beautiful and eerie all at the same time. The voice acting is perfectly tuned as well. To fully appreciate this game I believe you have to understand the primary focus of The Walking Dead. It’s not grab a gun and see how many zombies you can put down while trying to get away. If that’s what you’re looking for then maybe you should check out the “Left For Dead” video game series.
The Walking Dead – A New Day is a done like a choose your own adventure story. It’s about making choices in a world that has gone bad with zombies trying to kill you. It’s about raw human emotion. Every single choice you make within the game can change the game for you.
The game mechanics take some getting used to with one thumb stick on your controller controlling your view point, while the other moves your character. Once you get a hang of it however the game just draws you in to the story.
A New Day is the first chapter and TellTale will release new chapters as the months roll on. Upon completion of the first chapter I only wanted more. I wanted to go back and replay the game and choose different choices. The game even tells you the percentage of other players that made the same decisions that you did after you complete it. Who will you save? Are you nice or mean? How will you survive? It’s all here; and this is definitely one story and video game that you should not pass up.
I’m not going to tell you all the details of the story. I will just tell you that you’re going to meet new characters. You’re going to see Hershel Green’s farm. You’re going to run across Glen and you’re going to play as an all new character that you will surely want to learn all you can about his story.
