Many have criticized disabling the Windows XP desktop wallpaper as an inefficient method for freeing system resources. There are, however, many low memory systems using very high resolutions images from a digital camera as desktop wallpapers. In these instances, the resource consumption can be severe.
When you pull a full resolution image from the internet or your camera without optimizing it, the file size of the image can be massive. Windows XP loads this image into memory so it can retain the image at all times for instant display.
This leaves individuals with a couple of options: First, they can optimize the image using a free image editing software such as The Gimp. Second, they can replace the image with a default optimized Windows XP background or disable the background all together, thus freeing the most resources possible.
For low memory Windows XP systems, removing the desktop wallpaper is an essential step for improving overall system performance. Even for high memory systems, if high resolutions photos from a digital camera or the internet are used, performance drain can also be significant. In these instances the wallpaper should be either optimized or disabled.

In this video, I cover how to disable the Windows XP desktop wallpaper.
How To Disable The Windows XP Desktop Wallpaper:

2. Right Click anywhere on the ‘Desktop’.
3. Select ‘Properties’.
4. Choose the ‘Desktop’ tab.
5. In the ‘Background’ section, choose ‘None’.
6. Click ‘Apply’ and ‘Ok’.
