With a wife, 2 year old, 3 month old, full time job and a startup, a family entrepreneur such as myself has very little time for much else. There are many entrepreneurs out there who can relate. When managing a startup and a family, sleep rarely becomes a regular part of the equation. Sleep is a time-sink. It just gets in the way.
Family is one of the most rewarding experiences in my lifetime. It’s exhausting, yes, but the joy that comes with it is one of a kind. While this lifestyle is not for everyone, the entrepreneur with a family has very specific physical and emotional challenges they must overcome.
Sleep is one such challenge, but the more severe challenge is time. Like a family, a startup needs food. It needs nurturing. It needs care. One cannot simply abandon their business with expectations of long term success. It is at the crossroads of nurturing family and business that we entrepreneurs find our dilemma.
The solution is not complex. Sacrifices must be made. Sacrifices that ensure the safety and health of the family, but also ensure the growth and success of the business. Time management quickly becomes top priority for the family entrepreneur. Time management is what separates the entrepreneur who lost his family from the one who lost his business.
Time is a funny thing. When we have lots of it, we don’t appreciate it. When we have none of it, we would to anything to get more. The most important lesson I’ve learned is balance. Proper time management works like weights on a scale. At first, the weights may fall too far left or too far right. Eventually, if balanced properly, the scale reaches an equilibrium.
By constantly shifting the weights between family and startup, our lives, too, find a balance. This is our goal. We must aim to give the proper time to all we care for. We must put or personal desire to care for one more than the other aside. In time, both will yield different fruit, and bring about a greater sense of joy in our lives
