I’ve been building websites and blogging for well over 8 years. One of the most difficult decisions faced by any blogger is selecting a topic. The future of the blog is framed around it’s content. Many fall into the snare of allowing the content market to frame their topic. There is a better way.
Blogging wasn’t created for the purpose of appealing to the masses. An effective blog is a product of the individual’s passions and opinions. More specifically, a blog is meant to be as personal as possible, thus providing unique perspective on an old idea. Ideas and information can be found anywhere. It is perspective and experience that are unique.
When perspective and experience intersect with knowledge and passion, bloggers find their place. At this point the blogger’s journey begins. Each individual is a combination of unique experiences, perspectives and knowledge. But most importantly, one must consider their passions.
Since passion drives each individual’s interests, it also drives knowledge. Human beings are much quicker to learn what they love. When we search deep within ourselves, we find a finite list of our passions. These passions are the starting point of sharing appealing perspective and experience.
To stand out in the blogosphere, we must make a choice. We must choose the most powerful passion. This passion must be rooted in our experience. Lastly, these passions and experiences must allow us to give unique perspective.
Using these criteria, the list of topics to choose from becomes very small. At this point, but no sooner, we can allow outside influences to weigh in: topic popularity, revenue potential, competition. To consider outside influences any sooner risks long term failure and disappointment.
