It’s most definitely that time of year again. A time when the wind gets a little cooler. The leaves on the trees turn many different shades of red, orange, and brown. Houses in my neighborhood start to light up at night with different colored lights and that awesome feeling of Christmas starts to take it’s hold on me. I love the Holidays for so many different reasons. It seems that each year I try and get into the spirit of Christmas a little earlier and once it’s over I try and hang on to it a little bit longer.
As a child of the 80’s and 90’s I was fortunate to witness so many great technological creations over those years. Each year right before Christmas I would spend countless hours sitting by the fire and looking at my family’s giant Christmas tree. I would look at all of the gifts under the tree and know exactly which gifts went to me and which ones went to my siblings. I can remember the giant JC Penny’s catalog that came in the mail each year right after Thanksgiving.
This thing was like my bible for the months of November and December. I would spend so much time carefully going over each page in the toy section and the technology section. With the instructions from my mother and father to circle something if I see anything that I liked. You can bet that by the time I got done; the entire two sections would be filled with black circles that I had made around the pictures of each thing that I hoped to get on Christmas day!
I am also one of those kids that believed in Santa Clause for way longer than I probably should have. I just didn’t want to let go of that. I can remember thinking that all of my gifts were even that much cooler because they were, “elf made”. There was something about having my gadgets and toys be made by Santa’s elves that really made me think it was much better than the store bought versions. It’s kind of crazy to see all the new things that they are coming up with for kids these days. The Elf On A Shelf phenomenon would have definitely scared me to death as a child. The thought of some elf doll being alive and watching me I’m pretty sure would not have sat well with me in my younger years.
Thinking back on all the great Christmases that I have had in my life makes me think about just how far technology has come. I can remember the year that I got my first Nintendo Entertainment System. Actually for me the first one I got for Christmas was the Super NES. I was so happy with it and so excited to have it! It was such a huge step up from the original Nintendo.
I had a game called, F-Zero along with the latest Super Mario Bros. game. I remember my gift being the hit of the family. Everyone wanted to hang out in my room after that. We would stay up all night long many nights during the Christmas holiday playing those games. Then later in the after noon after everyone had done the family thing; my friends would come over for more fun and hours of gaming.
Even before all of the video gaming consoles started taking over the market there were many Christmases where Star Wars and GI-Joe toys were at the top of my list. I don’t care what people say about technology being so much greater today. That’s true it indeed is that; but the toys in my opinion have taken a step backwards. I just don’t think they make toys as cool as they did when I was a kid. That may be because I’m not a kid anymore. Who knows?
I remember the year that my brother first came back home from college. Even before Christmas day he had this new thing that none of us had ever heard of. It was white and had a weird looking click wheel on it. He told me that on that thing was 1,000 songs that he could listen to. Of course what my brother pulled out of his pocket was the original iPod. This thing was so very cool! I immediately wanted one for Christmas.
What’s On Your List?
So what new gadgets and technology are on your list this year? Will you be getting a new gaming console, or computer? Do people still buy DVDs and Blu-Ray disc anymore? One of the best gifts that I’ve been getting for the past two or three years from my parents is a renewed year worth of Netflix. I do love my Netflix! It’s crazy to think about however that as little as three years ago that was really the new big thing in terms of movie renting. Now they are everywhere. Just about every cable company has On Demand. Then there’s that thing called The Internet that pretty much lets you watch whatever you want if you know where to look and are willing to pay for your content. I wonder what’s going to be on our list in another three years?
It is interesting to me how things change over the years. I no longer need a JC Penny’s catalog. When I am asked what I want for Christmas I generally have to search to find an answer. In fact my favorite things about Christmas now can never be wrapped up in a box and put under a tree. For me being able to spend time with my family is the best gift of all. As each of us grew up we all live in different states now. Christmas is one of the greatest times that we all are able to gather under one roof and enjoy the magic of Christmas together. To me; that’s what it’s really all about!
Merry Christmas everyone.
